Student Conference on Inter-American Studies

You are cordially invited to the first meeting of students who would like to participate in the Student Conference on Inter-American Studies.

WHAT IS IT?

It is a student-initiated conference seeking to promote an interdisciplinary study of the Americas. It aims to bring new topics to the faculty and offer students an opportunity to speak up and demonstrate their skills and knowledge.

WHO CAN BECOME INVOLVED?

Every student that is interested in Inter-American Studies, i.e. any aspect of life, culture, identity or society in the “Western Hemisphere”, and willing to work.

The organizers are looking for SPEAKERS who will deliver papers on topics in Inter-American Studies in a language of their own choice and CONFERENCE INTERPRETERS who will facilitate general understanding.

POSSIBLE TOPICS:

  • Inter-American Studies – prospects, challenges (from American to Inter-American Studies)
  • US – Canada relations (M. Atwood – A Letter to America, ..)
  • Canada's Engagement in the Americas
  • US – Mexico borders (maquiladoras problem, identity crisis – La Consciencia de la Mestiza: Towards a New Consciousness,  NAFTA...)
  • Spanish-speaking USA (nueastro himno)
  • Position of Brasil within the Spanish-speaking Latin America
  • Thomas Paine or José Martí of Canada – or a constitutional monarchy in the rebelling Americas
  • own topic proposals are welcome too

WHEN?

In the winter term meetings will be held approximately once a month. By mid-January speakers will be expected to have submitted their papers so that interpreters will have enough time to prepare for the conference. The conference itself will take place at the beginning of the summer term.
