KAA Summer Festival: Building Up Tradition

24/05/2012 18:04

The KAA Christmas Festival turned out to be such a success that the students decided to conduct another festival again this spring. This time the event did not take place at the A-4 theatre due to the unfortunate closing down of the facility, but at a theatre in Zrkadlovy Haj, Petrzalka, further from the city center.  The price for tickets bought in advance was 2€ and 3€ for tickets sold at the door. The food and drinks were given out for free.

The theatre in Zrkadlovy Haj was smaller than the previous one and not as cozy as the A-4 theatre. In the A-4 theatre you had a room with the seats where the play was performed closed off from the rest of the facility, where the food and drinks were. Thus, one was not distracted by conversations of people who were not watching the play. The whole aspect of the event being downtown rather than in Petrzalka (a rather infamous neighborhood in Slovakia) was somewhat more appealing. However, other theatres in downtown would not have been affordable, so the event was staged in Zrkadlovy Haj instead.

The program began with Ivan Vyrypaev’s Oxygen, a play revolving around the love story of the dancing Sasha from the provinces and the other female Sasha from cosmopolitan Moscow.  The skit centered on a philosophical debate concerning dancing, lust and the essential. In the original play, the lines were rapped, but the students decided to do without the rap, as probably no rappers were to be found at our department.  As it was carried out without rapping, the impression was quite different from the original play. Also, the original Russian lines about the dancing in the beginning sound somewhat more musical to the ear, at least in the filmed version of the play. The beginning of Oxygen sounded more enthusiastic, but this may have been the case due to the acoustics in the theatre, as it was really difficult to hear the actors at times. More or less, the main message of the play got through.  The play was followed by Robertson Davies’ Eros at Breakfast, which was named the best Canadian play of 1948 by the Dominion Drama Festival. In the play, each character represented a specific component of the human body and how they were affected by one man’s romance. The play contained several funny scenes and seemed to keep the audience engrossed. Once again, due to the acoustics of the theatre, it was hard to hear all the details; some people even mentioned that they did not understand what the play was about until about half way through the play. The play was followed by musical performances from the Jazz Nut Trio and the Raw Bishops which hopefully captivated the attention of all lovers of jazz and similar styles of music. After the plays ended, the audience moved on to the refreshment tables containing delicious chips and wine, and most importantly—free of charge.

Although the two plays did not make such an impression on the audience as during the KAA Christmas Festival, we should still be grateful to the cast, as events like these are not very common at our department. Mr. Lacko said in the article about the aforementioned festival that our department has never had anything like the KAA Christmas Festival before. Based on the feedback I received from fellow students, the biggest problems of this spring’s performance were a lack of action, a bad acoustic situation, and a lack of introduction pertaining to the plays.  Some people have also suggested that it would have been better if we had a performance of plays that we had studied at our university and were familiar with. The unfavorable acoustic situation combined with a lack of contextual knowledge, especially as both plays were more or less discussion oriented rather than action charged, did not have the same effect on the audience as the KAA Christmas Festival. The discussion oriented manner of the plays did not enable the students to show off their acting talents, which were so visible during the previous event. We should also take into account the shorter length of the summer semester, a semester of state exams, which perhaps did not enable our students to perform a more complex play that would be more action packed, as was the case with the play performed at Christmas.

I, on the behalf of all my peers at our department, would like to thank the students involved for organizing this event, and hope that what started last winter will not be an ephemeral flame, but the start of a long tradition at our department.

Subject: Len poznámka

Nezvyknem prispievať do diskusných fór. Niektoré fakty v ňom zanikli, niektoré sa vôbec neobjavili a niektoré by mi vôbec nechýbali (napr. to, koľko stáli vstupenky a že občerstvenie bolo "most importantly - free of charge").

Moj nazor ma hrat v reportazi minimalnu rolu.

Subject: Oxygen

Oxygen som porovnaval s :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciDBWEe4N4s
https://www.rusfilm.pitt.edu/2010/oxygen.pdf

Subject: objasnenie

Ja som kritizoval Eros at Breakfast iba z akustickeho hladiska, a nie kvalitu hry.

Inak Veronika, nie si nahodou clenom facebook skupiny nasej katedry?
